Ohio State has appeared in 36 post-season
bowl games in its history, coming away with victory
17 times. 13 of those bowl trips were to Pasadena, California,
for the Rose Bowl, considered the "granddaddy of
them all". There would have been many more appearances,
but the Big Ten conference had a "no repeat"
rule until the early 1970s. The 1996 season ended with
a Rose Bowl victory, the sixth time Ohio State did the
Big Ten proud out west:
1949 Beat California 17-14 in 1950
Rose Bowl
1954 Beat USC 20-7 in 1955 Rose Bowl
1957 Beat Oregon 10-7 in 1958 Rose Bowl
1968 Beat USC 27-16 in 1969 Rose Bowl
1973 Beat USC 42-21 in 1974 Rose Bowl
1996 Beat Arizona State 20-17 in Rose Bowl
The 11 other bowl wins have come in six
different states. Arizona has been a kind place to the
Buckeyes, with Ohio State claiming three Fiesta Bowl
trophies. Certainly the most ornate of the bowl trophies,
OSU won in Tempe in back to back seasons, including
in the BCS title game to cap off the 2002 National Championship:
1983 Beat Pittsburgh 28-23 in 1984 Fiesta
Bowl
2002 Beat Miami 31-24 in 2003 Fiesta Bowl
2003 Beat Kansas State 35-28 in 2004 Fiesta Bowl
2005 Beat Notre Dame 34-20 in 2005 Fiesta Bowl
The only other bowl game that has witnessed
multiple Buckeye victories is the Holiday Bowl, played
each year in San Diego, California:
1982 Beat BYU 47-17 in 1982 Holiday
Bowl
1993 Beat BYU 28-21 in 1993 Holiday Bowl
Ohio State is the only school in the
Big Ten that has participated in every major New Year's
Day bowl game. The Buckeyes have been fortunate to win
each of them, too. OSU brought a bowl full of oranges
(Orange Bowl) back from Miami in 1977:
1976 Beat Colorado 27-10 in 1977 Orange
Bowl
The Buckeyes have made three trips to
the Bayou, including back to back visits in 1997-98.
Ohio State satisfied its sweet tooth (Sugar Bowl) in
New Orleans on January 1, 1999.
1998 Beat Texas A&M 24-14 in 1999
Sugar Bowl
OSU is still the only Big Ten conference
member to play in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Earle Bruce's
fedora and the players' red cleats were the good luck
charms in 1987.
1986 Beat Texas A&M 28-12 in 1987
Cotton Bowl
Freedom rang for the Bucks in Memphis,
Tennessee, in December of 1981. That year, OSU defeated
Navy by a field goal in the Liberty Bowl.
1981 Beat Navy 31-28 in 1981 Liberty
Bowl
Defense ruled the (New Year's) day in
1986 in Orlando, Florida. Thanks to linebackers Larry
Kolic and Chris Spielman, the Buckeyes won the Citrus
Bowl:
1985 Beat BYU 10-7 in 1986 Citrus Bowl
Buckeyes will remember the Alamo from
2004. OSU dominated another (Oklahoma State) in the
33-7 Alamo Bowl win.
2004 Beat Oklahoma State 33-7 in 2004
